In his heart a man plans his course,
but the Lord determines his steps.
A saint does not pray for God to reveal His will to him, so that he can process it through his rationality and decide whether to go along. A saint prays like this: “Lord, give me more of You. Show me more of You. And direct my steps.” A saint does not lean on his own understanding. He is not perpetually looking at his feet, evaluating the terrain, and deciding his most prudent steps. A saint looks upward at all times.
I know, O Lord, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.
